Our Major Partner

Community Aid

The AUDSS aims to inspire and educate students beyond the dental academia. The AUDSS promotes student leadership through providing opportunity to address the matrix of social, political and economic factors that cause, contribute and continue problems in local and international oral-health. The AUDSS leads in action through joint-initiatives with the Global Health Group of the Adelaide University – Insight , and other local and national community organizations.

Local Community Projects

In Partnership with the Adelaide School of Dentistry

The AUDSS in collaboration with members of the staff at the Adelaide School of Dentistry seeks to involve students in Community Outreach Dentistry in the following avenues:

•  Homeless Shelters: Currently, there is opportunity for establishing contact and informal conversation to provide oral-health education. This is a great opportunity for building a trusting relationship. Later this year, funding a single chair clinic is proposed at one of the centres. It is hoped that when this occurs there will be scope to screen at various centres and to provide much needed dental services.

•  Visits to Supported Residential Facilities (SRF's) with the Screening Team: These boarding house facilities are home to many suffering from mental illnesses and many of whom have suffered some degree of homelessness.

•  Nursing Home Visits: Students accompany staff or the screening team to provide or assist with on site dental care. In addition, there m ay be some opportunity to assist with education sessions at the nursing homes.

Numbers able to attend at various facilities:

•  Homeless Shelters: Not strictly limited, could manage several students at one time. Education sessions suitable for any year level from BOH 2 and BDS 2 upward. When treatment sessions and screening become available at these shelters, opportunity will be made available for BOH3 and BDS 5 (however, undecided at this time)

•  SRF's: BOH3, BDS 4-5

•  Nursing Home Visits: BOH3 and BDS 4-5

Currently SRF visits will occur on the 2 nd and 3 rd Thursday of the month – alternatively Nursing Home Visits on this day.

The 1 st and 4 th Thursday will possibly be Homeless Shelter Visits, and maybe some education sessions for patrons and or staff.
